If you're running into trouble with a program or a file in your computer, I may be able to help. I can't guarantee knowledge of all programs, but in my years in high tech, I spent much of my time developing tools and processes to make the authoring and publishing process easier and more efficient. If you're seeing something unexpected, I may be able to explain what's going on and how to avoid it. Or if you find yourself doing the same thing over and over, I can probably provide a suggestion or tool to reduce to streamline your process.
I have considerable experience in converting content from one file format to another and cleaning up content in various file formats. This is often needed for HTML and XML files. (Note that Word docs are really just XML files in a ZIP container, so sometimes it's easier to export from that format to get cleaner content.)
Are you working with graphics that need to be resized or converted to a different format. I have experience with open-source tools that make this easier. I can do these conversions for you or show you how to do it yourself.
Some possible areas where I can help:
- GEDCOM cleanup or conversions.
- Extraction of "cloud-based" documents into local files.
- Conversion of Word documents to other file formats.
- Exporting files to HTML for websites.
- Cleanup of corrupt or "broken" files.
- Website development assistance (including HTML/CSS/etc.).
- Reformatting or cleanup of HTML files.
- Graphic conversion assistance.
- WikiTree application development.
Here's a useful tip: When making global changes to files, a standard "search and replace" can work well, but have you tried using a "regex" (regular expression)? Many authoring tools offer this feature, but it may have a different name or be hidden in some way. If you're not familiar with this, let me know. Learning how to leverage regular expressions can be very powerful!
■ If you need help with a computer-related issue, let's work to find a solution. If this is a one-time situation, I can give you a quote to solve the problem. If you see that there may be ongoing issues, you can use my "Ask Scott" service. Ask Scott allows you to pay ahead for a certain amount of time, then I deduct time from your balance as you use it. It all depends on what you need.
